|Summary||0000278: VFR: improved VFR departures allowing traffic patterns (simplified)|
|Description||For VFR departures it is unusual to get handed over to center quickly and get heading instructions soon after takeoff. Usually you fly the published traffic pattern and remain on tower frequency. Since the handling of traffic patterns will be quite complex to be implemented I have following suggestion for a quite simple improvement for VFR flight departures.|
In case VFR flight is selected (or automatically detected) and SID disabled, following rules should apply:
- initial altitude = airport elevation + 1000ft rounded up to the next full 500 (so 1500,2000,2500,3000,3500,4000,…)
- handover from tower to center when exiting the 3NM radius around the airport, not earlier (see chart below)
- after contacting the center frequency you will get the first heading instruction an clearance for further climb
(if easy to program: provide the first heading instruction directly along with the first instruction from ATC after contacting center)
If you prefer, you can even make the radius for VFR traffic pattern configureable in the options. So if someone does not like that function, it can be disabled by setting this value very low to even to 0.
In my opinion that will enable much more realistic VFR departures without already implementing all traffic pattern functions (that will be quite some work). Actually if flying within the 3NM radius you can comply to whatever published traffic pattern and when exiting the airport area you will get ATC instructions from center. In case someone does a simple straight out departure without traffic pattern also after 3NM automatically there will be ATC instructions again.
